Colombian Music 101 – 2 hours

This experience is a real treat for music lovers. Colombia is one of the richest countries in Latin America in terms of musical rhythms, having a tremendous musical diversity comparable to Brazil or Cuba. On this tour, Gregorio Uribe will open you the doors to his house and his studio to have the marvelous opportunity to experience and learn about Colombian music. Gregorio will guide you through Colombian rich musical heritage as he plays a selection of songs of multiple genres and uses the piano and drums as a didactic tool for a more comprehensive approach to Colombian music

Later, visit the Egyptian Quarter, experience social transformation at Breaking Borders, then visit the Buena Semilla Foundation to see a wool and wood workshop considered an oasis in a neighborhood where many people have died due to gang violence. The fruit tour is a unique experience that will engage you with the vast diversity of food, geography and cultures of Colombia in just one place: the Paloquemao Plaza, the only market in the world where you can find up to 67 different fruits! An expert guide, who has worked with the market community since 2015, will connect you with farmers and merchants so that you can learn about their family businesses and community projects, as you taste Colombia’s mega-diversity

Breaking Borders + Lunch and Wood and Weaving Workshop – 4 hrs.
The visit to the traditional wood carving and wool workshop at the Buena Semilla Foundation is an unforgettable experience for passionate individuals. Led by women and former inmates of the Egipito community, you will deeply experience “breaking borders” and discover one of the most traditional crafts in Colombia and the Andean region by weaving the famous ruanas.

Departure for Chingaza National Park, hike in the magical páramo mountains. During this extraordinary hike, you will encounter frailejón valleys and visit the sacred lagoon — Siecha lagoons, of the pre-Columbian Muisca communities. Dinner and overnight at HAB Hotel.

Today, we will visit the unique tundra landscape of the Andean highlands. We will visit Chingaza National Park and take a 3-hour low-to-medium difficulty hike to discover the three sacred Muisca lagoons, from ancient pre-Columbian communities. The páramos are unique ecosystems of the South American tropics, and Colombia has the most páramos in the world. You will visit the sacred Siecha lagoons and walk through valleys full of frailejones. Enjoy nature at a beautiful farm outside of Bogotá. Learn about the planting of coffee, fruits, and vegetables, and then enjoy a fresh, local meal. After tasting the coffee and exploring the place, you will see the different stages of the coffee-making process. Starting with the seeds, through transplanting, cultivation, and harvesting, you will connect with nature and learn about the different coffee species and the factors that make Colombian specialty coffee so valuable. Visit La Boquilla, a lesser-known beach in Cartagena, and meet a group of fishermen who have dedicated their lives to preserving this crucial marine ecosystem. Drums at the beach – 2 hours

During the Beach Drum Experience, you will discover the energetic rhythms of Afro-Colombian voices and genres with experts. This takes place 20 minutes by car from Cartagena in La Boquilla, a fishing village with a thriving culture. After getting to know the area with a local resident, you will begin your musical experience provided by a social enterprise that uses this art to support local youth. San Basilio de Palenque, Music, Food and Freedom! 8 hours! 8 hrs

San Basilio de Palenque is the first free town in the Americas, established by self-emancipated former African slaves during Colombia’s colonial periods. This town remains a symbol of African resistance and honor during the colonial era. Due to isolation and resistance, the Palenqueros have preserved African culture by creating new local manifestations such as Alegrías (a type of candy), Son Palenquero (a musical genre), and the first Spanish-based Creole language, which is still spoken in this area.
